Lawmakers speak on impeachment
U.S. Rep. Fred Keller, R-Kreamer, on Thursday blasted House Democrats supporting the resolution outlining the next phase of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
The measure sketches out guidelines for public hearings in the inquiry and the president’s participation in the process.
The 232-196 vote passed nearly along party lines. No Republicans voted for the resolution.
Keller took to the House floor to criticize Democrats led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and “Impeachment Czar” Adam Schiff over what he called the “sham impeachment inquiry” resolution.
“House Democrats’ vote today to try and open these proceedings is nothing short of Soviet Glasnost; a fake transparency that only leads to less participation, more secrecy and less due process,” Keller said. “This is too little too late. You can’t un-ring the bell on this sham process that is simply Speaker Pelosi’s attempt to undo the 2016 election at all costs.”
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, had a different perspective on the resolution.
“I support the House’s impeachment resolution because President Trump’s conduct was a textbook case of abuse of power,” Casey said. “Using the power of the Presidency to pressure the leader of a foreign government to investigate your political opponent, as indicated in the memorandum of the call with the Ukrainian president and subsequent testimony from senior national security officials, is a betrayal of the public’s trust and it undermines our democracy.
“If the House sends articles of impeachment to the Senate for a trial, I will listen to all of the evidence with an open mind before making a decision on a vote regarding conviction,” he said.
