Township school mulls adding volleyball

With the goal of hopefully offering girl’s volleyball as an official sport at Loyalsock Township School District, parent Rebbecca Hall reported to the board Wednesday night that 65 girls had signed up to play the sport.

The team, which is being offered currently to district girls, is under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union. Hall told the board that there are 10 members on the team.

Noting that there is a lot of interest in having the sport in the district, Hall said that the team is holding its practices at Schick Elementary School and one night a week at the YMCA.

District Superintendent Gerald McLaughlin said the next step towards getting the sport officially in the district is to contact the district’s athletic director to begin the process

In other business, the board approved an educational trip, “Service & Language Immersion in the Dominican Republic,” tentatively scheduled for summer 2021. There is no cost to the district for the trip.

The board also approved an out-of-state field trip request by Amanda Coughenour to take approximately 50 students to see “The Lion King” on Broadway in April 2020. The only cost to the district would be for a substitute teacher.
