City Council will meet to address veto
City Council has scheduled a meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday to consider the 2020 budget veto by Mayor Gabriel J. Campana.
Council is expected to meet to discuss the $28.1 million budget that it adopted on Dec. 12, said Council President Randall J. Allison.
Campana vetoed the budget, which necessitated the meeting with council, he said.
Under the third-class optional city charter, council would require a majority vote of five members, which would be two-thirds of its seven members to vote yes to override the mayor’s veto, Allison said.
Campana said he vetoed the budget because he said a tax hike of 0.25-mills that council included in its amended budget was not needed.
Council members said the millage increase budget was necessary to give the city at least $263,000 in the fund balance or city savings account in the general fund moving forward.
