Jersey Shore approved new board member
JERSEY SHORE–The final seat on the Jersey Shore Area School Board was filled Monday night when the board approved David Becker as its newest board member by a 6-2 vote.
Voting yes were: Craig Allen, Wayne Kinley, Angela Grant, Patrice Doebler, Michelle Stemler and Mary Thomas. Voting no were: Harry Brungard and Nancy Petrosky.
Becker, a resident of Piatt Township, told the board that he wanted to give back to the community and make a positive impact when he was questioned about why he wanted the position on the board.
Following the meeting, Becker said that he felt he could provide a “middle ground, willing to work with everyone.”
Four other district residents joined Becker in seeking the seat. They were: Raye Bierly, Brittany Ellison, Jessie Manotti and Steve Waldman. In order to be approved a candidate had to receive at least five votes.
The selection process consisted of a series of questions from board members which each of the five candidates answered. These included questions about their qualifications and their opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the curricular and non-curricular programs in the district. They were also questioned on matters of stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
“Be as efficient as possible with the money we have,” Becker told the board. “Not just necessarily cutting everything, but trying to get the most out of every dollar.”
“There is a cost to doing business and there is certainly a cost to education. We don’t want to just blindly throw money at it, either, we want to try to work as efficiently as possible to try to maximize the taxpayers’ and the effect of their dollars on the students,” he added.
Becker, a former district teacher, is now employed as an IT instructor at The Pennsylvania College of Technology. A district resident since 2008, Becker also has children in the first and sixth grades in the district.
Becker fills the seat left vacant when Kelley Wasson resigned from the board last month in order to take a paid position in the district.
The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at the district board room, 175 A&P Drive.
