Loyalsock schools’ next budget to stay within index

The Loyalsock Township School Board voted to keep any possible tax increases for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2020, within the index set by the state.

The board agreed Wednesday that taxes will not be raised by more than 3.2 percent, or .469 mills, which means the tax rate cannot go above 15.13 mills, should there be an increase. The current millage is 14.67.

By agreeing to this, the board is not saying that it will raise taxes for the next fiscal year, but that it will not go above that figure if a tax increase is included in next year’s budget.

Prior to the business portion of the meeting, the board held a reorganizational meeting in which two new board members and three returning members were sworn in by District Judge Gary Whiteman.

New members are Valerie N. Komarnicki and Michael J. Zicolello. Returning members are Paul R. Young II, Christina L. Kiessling and Carolyn R. Strickland. All will serve four-year terms.

Following the installation, Young was elected president and John B. Raymond vice-president.

The new board also approved its meeting schedule for 2020.

During the regular meeting the board approved the appointment of Ashley Sekel as middle school principal, effective Jan. 2. Sekel, who is currently the assistant principal at the high school, will receive a prorated salary of $82,000 for the 2019-20 school year.

In conjunction with Sekel’s appointment, the board acknowledged the resignation of Charles Greevy IV as middle school principal, effective Dec. 31.

Scott Moll was approved as a technology specialist for the current school year, effective Dec. 5, at a prorated salary of $43,000.

Board members present were: Charles W. Edmonds, Kiessling, Komarnicki, Robert D. Leidhecker, Raymond, Strickland, Young and Zicolello. Absent was Melvin E. Wetzel.

The next meeting will be Jan. 8, 2020, at the Board Conference Room, 1605 Four Mile Drive.
