UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury to close in March
SUNBURY — The UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Medical Center is expected to close March 31, 2020, UPMC Susquehanna President Steven Johnson announced Thursday morning, according to The Daily Item.
Closing the hospital, with roots starting back in the 19th century, will eliminate about 150 local jobs and leave Sunbury without a hospital for the first time in 120 years.
Johnson said the decision to close was due to customers not using the center for medical services.
“This decision was made with careful consideration and analysis of the use of hospital services in the region. According to market data, patients are utilizing facilities other than UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury for their care,” Johnson told The Daily Item.
According to 2017 tax filings, the hospital had $17.6 million in expenses and only brought in $15.5 million, a deficit of $2 million, The Daily Item reported.
