City council fills new mayor’s seat

Councilman David Banks, a Democrat, was elected by the four members attending the meeting to fill the vacancy left by Derek Slaughter, who is mayor.

It was the first official votes for Councilmen Adam Yoder, Jon Mackey and Vincent Pulizzi.

Banks was up against Tiasha Machuga and John DeSantis, both of whom were present for the vote.

Councilman Randall Allison remarked on how appreciative he was for Machuga and DeSantis’ services — DeSantis for his work on the Historical Architectural Review Board and Machuga for running a campaign for council and for agreeing to be one of the finalists for filling Slaughter’s vacancy.

“The three applicants speaks well for the depth of the city for people who step forward,” Allison said.

Two familiar faces will lead Williamsport City Council for the year ahead.

Council President Allison and Council Vice President Liz Miele were reelected at the council Monday night reorganization meeting at City Hall.

Allison said, as president, he does not own council.

“We’re a team and always function that way,” he said.

The next scheduled council meeting is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, he said.
