Softball back in Elm Park

After a two-year hiatus, Elm Park will be used by the Lycoming County Softball Association, following a five-year lease approved this week by City Council.

Mayor Derek Slaughter said the space should be used again and the individuals with the association are eager to get started and reopen Elm Park.

Leagues, high school and college teams will use the park, and there will be tournaments set up throughout the spring and summer, according to Joe Tedesco, Muncy High School softball coach and organizer of the association.

Councilwoman Liz Miele said it not only brings back sports to the fields but also takes the burden off of the city streets and parks department having to maintain the site on West Fourth Street across from Memorial Park and Bowman Field.

The association will take care of the field as part of the agreement.

Organizers said they believe if all goes well, they may even bring in a portable ice skating rink and hold off-season events, such as a flea market and Christmas tree sales.

In other business, council authorized the demolition of the former Susquehanna Supply Co. building at 2 Rose St. Nearly 28 acres was purchased there by Williamsport Baseball Inc. in preparation for a sports-themed ballfield complex in coordination with the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.

Jason Fink, executive director of the chamber, said the area once was a trash dump that was covered over.

Gary Knarr, city zoning administrator, said the area will be used for athletic purposes.

Other uses could cost much more as the property is classified as a “brownfields” site and would need remediation, Knarr said. It would have to be dug up and environmental hazards mitigated, he said.
