Camp offers health care workers safe lodging

TROUT RUN — Camp Susque is offering living quarters to doctors, nurses and health care professionals who may have been exposed to COVID-19 or who were working in areas where the virus is prevalent.

Peter Swift, executive director of the non-profit youth camp, said the offer is to doctors and nurses who were working around patients with the virus or potentially at high-risk to be exposed themselves.

“They may self-quarantine without returning to their homes,” Swift said.

The camp, 15 miles north of Williamsport, is expecting the first medical providers to arrive today.

“We are planning to offer them lodging and meals,” Swift said.

A paramedic who used to be a counselor at the summer camp heard about the potential need at work, Swift said.

Some doctors and nurses are returning from virus “hot zones” out of the region, he said.

The camp has two lodges with hotel-style rooms and other more rugged living quarters, he said.

Should the plan work out, Swift said the camp board has agreed to broaden the scope of health care providers who may be impacted by working around patients potentially infected or in need of isolation, such as first responders or elderly family members of those in related health care fields who may be more susceptible and have compromised immune systems.

Guests can hike and use the hot spot for the Wi-Fi for their telemedicine and other purposes, he said.

For any medical professional interested, it is best to call the office at 570-998-2151 or email director@susque.org to make arrangements online.

While Swift and others do not know when the emergency isolation measures will be lifted, they have continued to plan for the summer camp programs, which are slated to begin June 14.
