City may reopen in early May

Mayor Derek Slaughter said Williamsport might be the first classified city to reopen to business since shelter in place orders went into effect on March 15.

Slaughter told City Council’s finance committee Tuesday that he monitors daily the state Health Department information and held a meeting with Steven Johnson, CEO of UPMC Susquehanna.

“Williamsport might be the first classified city to slowly reopen in the commonwealth,” Slaughter said.

“We want to make sure we do this in a measured way and hopefully be a model for the commonwealth,” he said.

Slaughter said he continues to look for guidance from Gov. Tom Wolf’s office on whether it will be May 8 or later.

The county had 58 COVID-19 cases at the time of the meeting.

Adam Winder, general manager of streets and parks department, said the street reconstruction contractor, Big Rocks Paving, is expected to begin its resurfacing of the streets May 4.
