County employees working less hours

Lycoming County government continues to function during the coronavirus pandemic, but many employees are working a little less.

“Basically, we are doing it to try and save money,” Lycoming County Commissioner Rick Mirabito said.

Hourly employees are working one less hour a day under the temporary working conditions put into effect late last week.

It is unknown precisely how much money the work reductions are expected to save the county.

The reduced work hours do not impact all of the county’s approximately 500 employees.

Corrections officers at the county prison, adult and probation officers, and personnel at the 911 emergency center and the coroner’s office are not included.

Salaried employees, Mirabito noted, can volunteer for less work and pay.

“By law, we cannot decide to reduce them,” he said.

The courthouse has remained open, although operations are not functioning in normal fashion.

People requiring courthouse services are being asked to call ahead.

“Many things you can do online,” Mirabito said.

The coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted both the private and public sector, has posed challenges for county government as well.

“The preoccupation has been with COVID-19,” Mirabito said. “County government is still functioning. People in different departments are able to work from home. The overwhelming majority of workers are still working.”

The commissioners have reduced their public meetings from two to one weekly.

The virtual meetings can be accessed at the county website at www.lyco.org.

Today’s meeting is set for 10 a.m.
