Lycoming County Prison inmate numbers down

The average daily population for male and female inmates in Lycoming County once again showed a decline, according to figures released at Friday’s monthly prison board meeting.

Lycoming County Prison Warden Brad Shoemaker revealed that the numbers for both the prison and the Pre-Release Center decreased from 260.52 in March to 201.89 in April.

The average daily inmate figure for males between the two months dipped from 223.65 to 178.36.

For females, the number decreased from 36.87 to 23.53 prisoners.

Overall inmate numbers continue to decline, but the last month may have been the biggest drop-off for quite some time.

In April, Shoemaker announced that plans were under way to reduce the inmate population due to the coronavirus pandemic. Inmate releases were to be done following a careful review of those deemed eligible under the plan.

In other matters, the prison board approved the hiring of Kaitlin Lunger as a full-time resident supervisor.

The next prison board meeting is set for 8:30 a.m., June 5.
