Relay for Life cancels May, June events
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the American Cancer Society has canceled all in-person events through the end of June.
This includes the Relay for Life of River Valley, which was originally scheduled for May 29 at the Williamsport Area Middle School, a news release said.
The volunteer event leadership team met virtually and decided not to hold the Relay For Life of River Valley for its 26th year due to all the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
“They felt it would not be in the best interest of the community due to all the economic issues to postpone it to a later date,” the news release said. “They had planned and were excited on being participating in the May 1st First Friday, but that has been canceled as well due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The volunteers will hopefully be able to work with that committee again for the 2021 event next Spring.
The American Cancer Society is needed now more than ever. Cancer patients, caregivers, survivors and volunteers are turning to the American Cancer Society for information and resources that will help them navigate this crisis.
“We need to continue to raise funds to be there for those that need us most, but these fundraising efforts can’t be involving large crowds,” the news release said.
Teams can individually sell raffle tickets, food, 5k runs, bike rides, virtual online bingo games, virtual thank-you signs for health care workers and essential workers and many other ideas.
“Please watch for these to be posted on social media,” the news release said.
