3 black bears removed from South Williamsport
Three bears discovered in a tree in South Williamsport in the vicinity of Rommelt Elementary School Thursday morning were removed from the area without incident.
South Williamsport Area School officials reported on the school’s Facebook site that the school resource officer, borough police, the South Williamsport Vol. Fire Department and state Game Commission personnel responded to the scene before students reported to the school.
A street was closed while officers stood by to ensure children arrived to the school building.
The bears, a mother and two cubs, reportedly climbed into the tree to nap after spending the night foraging through garbage cans.
The bears were tranquilized and removed from the area to another location by the Game Commission.
The mother bear reportedly weighed in at 322 pounds.
Game Commission officials could not be reached for comment.
