County prison inmate numbers increase

Inmate numbers in the Lycoming County Prison system showed a slight increase between the months of July and August.

Warden Brad Shoemaker reported to the prison board Friday that average daily numbers for male inmates rose from 175 to 184.74 between the two months for both the prison and the Pre-Release Center.

For female prisoners, the average daily number showed a slight dip from 31.23 in July to 29.87 in August, he reported.

That brought the average daily figure for all prisoners to 214.61 for August compared to 206.23 for July. In April, the number was 201.89, the lowest for the year when some inmates were being released from jail due to COVID-19 concerns.

In January, the average daily population was at its highest figure for the year at 319.51.

There were no prisoners transferred due to overcrowding.

In other matters, it was noted that 35 prisoner hearings were held in August for 29 different inmates.

The next prison board meeting is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9 at the Lycoming County Courthouse.
