Over the Edge returns for third year

Over the Edge, a rappelling fundraiser that benefits the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation, River Valley Regional YMCA and YWCA Northcentral PA is returning for a third year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday.

By committing to raising at least $1,000 to support one of the named organizations, participants gain the opportunity to rappel down the side of the Genetti Hotel at West Fourth and William streets.

During the event, which leaders of the Williamsport branch of the YMCA described as a “daring urban adventure” on Facebook, trained volunteers offer support and control the ropes at both ends, a news release about the event said.

As of Wednesday, more than 40 participants were expected to rappel and more than $34,000 had been raised for the three organizations, according to the Over the Edge coordinators’ website.

Funds raised on behalf of the education foundation will help a COVID-19 Relief Fund for the school district, which will support educational resources and technology, mental health resources for students and resources to support

economically disadvantaged students.

The funds raised for the River Valley Regional YMCA will support programs and services that address area needs in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Funds raised for the YWCA Northcentral PA will directly support the women who are working on rebuilding their lives after experiencing violent crimes and/or homelessness.

The third annual event will have some extra precautions in place in effort to adhere to guidelines due to COVID-19 for those who decide to rappel, according to the news release.
