Montoursville to use Community Development Block Grant funds for home repairs
Montoursville Borough Council approved the use of its 2021 Community Development Block Grant funding for home repairs in the community during its regular monthly meeting.
Council members discussed how best to allocate the borough’s allocation before deciding to go with the STEP Inc. homes in need program..
Kristin McLaughlin, of SEDA-Council of Governments, which administers funding, said the program considers codes compliance issues including electrical wiring, roofing, and other needs of homes.
She said the borough could likely help three to four homeowners with its funding share.
“There are people identified by STEP as likely to qualify for the program,” she said.
Council discussed using a portion of the CDBG money to finish construction of curb cuts at street intersections before deciding to use 2021 funding for the home repairs.
The vote was 6-0 with council members Mark Tillson, Ted Haines, Misty Emick, Eric Greenway, Christopher Lucas and Robert Brown voting yes.
In other matters, council approved spending $230,219 in American Rescue Plan funding for water and stormwater improvements.
Council approved an event permit for the Montoursville Men’s Softball League to hold a tournament Aug. 21 in Indian Park.
It was noted that the permit comes with the stipulation of a prohibition on alcohol or tobacco products.
Police Chief Jeff Gyurina reported to council that police are monitoring the recycling center for illegal dumping.
Most people, he said, are not using the recycling bins for throwing out trash.
“A handful of people are ruining it for everybody,” he said.
Street/Water Project Coordinator Cliff Hoffman reported to council that paving of Walnut and Arch streets is expected to begin next week.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel issues.
