A 25-year-old mother was hospitalized with injuries she suffered Tuesday night when she was shot “in the vicinity” of her home with her children in her custody, at Maple Street and Memorial Avenue, according to Assistant Police Chief Jason Bolt.

“The victim was found unconscious and taken by ambulance to the hospital. Officers secured the scene and were assisted with the collection of evidence by state police,” police said in a briefly-worded news release.

There was no information on the woman’s medical condition. Police were called to Maple Street for a reported shooting about 8:30 p.m. and located the victim. She was carried out of her home on a litter and put into the back of an ambulance that took her to UPMC Williamsport. Her children, who were not injured, are safe, Bolt said.

“This was not a random act,” Bolt said of the shooting, declining to elaborate.

Investigators spent several hours at the scene only to return late Wednesday morning to try to find more evidence. Agents gave a lot of attention to a Honda Civic, parked on Memorial Avenue, just south of the victim’s home. A bullet had struck the front of the car, police said.

“I heard four shots. It sounded like it was right here, outside,” said a mother, who lives a few doors from the victim’s home. “This block has been pretty quiet (before this),” she said.

The victim just moved into her home with her two children late last month, the neighbor said. “I reached out to her. She’s a very nice person, but I really don’t know her,” she said.

Another neighbor said she heard “two booms. I thought it was thunder. I’ve seen her (the victim) playing outside with her kids.”

No arrest has been made, and police shared no other details of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Agent Brittany Alexander at 570-327-7640.
