Fetterman, Waldman campaign in city

A snowstorm failed to keep Democrats from turning out to show their support for party members running for political office.

Those who braved the inclement weather Saturday to travel to the Young Men’s Democratic Club in Williamsport greeted Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a candidate for U.S. Senate, and Congressional hopeful Amanda Waldman.

“A little snow doesn’t stop us,” Fetterman told the gathering.

He thanked those who turned out for the event, which provided voters a chance to sign candidate petitions, and noted that every signature in the state is important for Democrats.

“It’s going to be a tough cycle for Democrats,” he said.

Waldman, seeking the 9th House seat held by Republican Dan Meuser, said she will “speak truth to power.”

She showed off a t-shirt bearing the message: “Unbought, Unbiased, Unapologetic.”

“I won’t apologize for not being bought,” she said.

State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who is running for governor, was unable to make the event.

Others who could not attend included lieutenant governor candidate Austin Davis and Congressional hopefuls Ed Giannattasio, Tom Dailey and Ronnie Ray Jenkins.

Fetterman said he was happy to see so many people from a predominantly Republican-voting area such as Lycoming County show up for the event.

“It’s often difficult to be a Democrat in a red county,” he said.

The insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, he noted, served as a wakeup call for the nation.

He called for unity and bipartisanship.

“It’s about showing up and trying to bring people together,” he said.

He listed no single issue that seems to be foremost on everyone’s mind.

“People just want to hear good things happen in this country,” he said.

While serving as mayor of the western Pennsylvania borough of Braddock, he said he learned what it takes to get things done including investing in a community.

Waldman said people have expressed to her concerns about inflation, the war in Ukraine, renewable energy, and their impatience with policymakers.

Waldman, who staged an unsuccessful bid for state House in 2020, described herself as a lifelong Lycoming County resident who, unlike incumbent Dan Meuser, is not about money and power.

She also said, “Josh Shapiro has to be our next governor.”

Lycoming County Commissioner Rick Mirabito told the gathering it’s important to elect Democrats.

“We need to get out and vote,” he said.
