Levee work continues toward certification

More levee work can be done toward the goal of accrediting and certifying the levee after Williamsport City Council approved a resolution.

The resolution awarded professional services for levee testing to GEO-Technology Association for $158,000.

The inspection of the relief wells must be done every five years, said Jon Sander, city engineer.

Keller Partners continues to serve as a lobbyist on the levee project. The Washington, D.C. firm is actively seeking potential legislative earmarks that will provide the funds needed to correct identified deficiencies in the levee.

Currently, the design of crosspipe replacements, pump house fixes and the strengthening of the levee wall along Lycoming Creek are among the next identified repairs and replacements needed toward certification.

The city continues to work with its local, state and federal partners such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Certification of the levee is needed to prevent the assessment of flood insurance requirements on those residents, businesses and nonprofits protected by the wall built in the mid-1950s.
