2 men killed in separate accidents on area highways
A Williamsport man was killed early Friday when the Subaru Impreza he was driving collided with a garbage truck on south Route 15 in Clinton Township, state police said.
James Haddix, 55, of Williamsport, was the driver who succumbed to injuries in the crash, which state police said took place just before 5 a.m. in the southbound lane of the highway, according to Trooper Ryan Smith.
Haddix was driving a Subaru Impreza and was unbelted when the collision occurred with the trash truck driven by Larry Sauers, 44, of Montgomery, who was with a passenger, Logan Sauers, according to Smith.
The crash occurred just south of the intersection with McNett Road. The roadway is an improved asphalt surface with a posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour. The garbage truck was traveling south on the roadway, when Sauers made a U-turn near the driveway of 6885 Route 15. Upon doing so, Haddix’s vehicle came from the rear of the garbage truck and collided with it at a perpendicular angle, Smith said. Neither of the Sauers was injured, police said.
The crash closed the road temporarily for over two hours before it was reopened, according to the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT District 3).
Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. said his office was called to investigate.
In the case of another road accident, Kiessling said he was investigating a second fatality, a 21-year-old male pedestrian, who was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 180 within city limits on Thanksgiving. There was no statement Friday from city or state police on this pedestrian struck and killed.
