Dumpster fire in Williamsport deemed ‘suspicious’ after string of alleged arson incidents
Following a rash of arson or attempted arsons that began in the city Monday, another fire erupted Tuesday night when flames engulfed rubbish in a Dumpster on Seth Street, just north of the 1300 block of West Fourth Street, about 8:45 p.m.
Fire Chief Sam Aungst, who was at the scene, said the fire was indeed suspicious.
A police officer said flames were shooting 15 to 20 in the air. The fire was knocked down before it had a chance to spread to a garage about 5 feet away.
All the fires thus far have been small. Someone set fire to a vehicle in the 1300 block of Park Avenue, and there was evidence that two cars in a downtown parking deck were also damaged by fire, officials said. However, these fires burned themselves out.
On Monday afternoon, four separate brush fires were set in some woods just south of the 1300 block of West Third Street. At least one couch in the 1000 block of Vine Avenue was set on fire earlier.
On Wednesday, firefighters from three communities plus members of the state Bureau of Forestry spent much of the afternoon working to contain a brush fire that consumed at least two acres — perhaps more — in the 5000 block of Sulphur Springs Road in Washington Township. Crews were still on the scene at nightfall.
Also on Wednesday, firefighters worked for nearly an hour to douse another brush fire, this one in the 1900 block of West Mountain Avenue in South Williamsport, reported about 10:20 a.m.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation. It was unknown they were at all related to the four brush fires set in the 1300 block of West Third Street in the city on Monday afternoon.
