Hughesville budget expected to have no tax hike

Hughesville Borough Council is putting the final touches on a 2025 budget that is expected to hold the line on property taxes.

Council at its recent meeting considered the proposed $1.2 million spending plan and any possible changes to it before voting to finalize the budget next month.

The deadline to approve a final budget is Dec. 31.

Financial Committee Chair Jerry Daugherty noted that several line items in the budget could show an increase, notably fire and police protection.

Council is expected to hire an additional full-time police officer next month.

Overall, the 2025 budget shows an increase of more than $100,000 in expenditures from 2024.

Real estate taxes are expected to comprise $402,000 of budget revenues.

In other matters, council discussed permit requirements for driveways.

Council had discussed the matter at a previous meeting, noting that various homeowners have made curb cuts to create the driveways without notifying the borough.

“The main reason for the permit is to know they are doing it,” Borough Solicitor Scott Williams said.

He noted that a nominal fee of perhaps $10 could be assessed property owners for the permit.

Council agreed to continue to hold its meetings in 2025 on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. The exception would be in May when council would meet only on May 12.

It was noted that the borough will likely end this year’s community-wide leaves pickup by Thanksgiving.

Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider contract and personnel issues.

The next council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9.

Starting at $2.99/week.
