Muncy Borough Council takes step toward closure of borough building

Muncy Borough Council has taken another step toward the eventual closing of the municipal building on North Washington Street.

At its most recent meeting, council voted to dispose and shed various documents dated prior to 2020 located inside the building.

Borough officials have not yet selected a location for municipal operations, but removal of paperwork represents the most recent action toward preparing for a move.

“A lot of stuff has been taken out of the attic of that building,” Borough Manager Charles Hall told council.

The building is not handicapped accessible, and the borough is under a federal order to find another location for municipal operations.

For the past year, council has been holding its public meetings at Muncy High School.

“A new borough building has been a pressing need for some time,” Hall said.

Among the possible sites is property at South Washington and New streets, a parcel obtained by the borough as part of a land swap with the public library.

Hall reminded council members they applied for a $1 million Local Share Account grant to construct a municipal building and maintenance facilities.

In the meantime, he said he is pursuing other funding sources, including federal grant money.

He noted that council will eventually need to approve the sale of the building.

In other action, council passed a resolution to consolidate the borough’s two voting precincts into one.

All Muncy voters will cast ballots at the First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market St., beginning in the April primary.

The Muncy Historical Society has previously served as a polling place.

The consolidation, Hall said, will reduce the number of poll workers otherwise needed and eliminate confusion residents have had about where to vote.

Council voted to purchase a generator at a cost of $1,061 for the borough’s two traffic lights.

Hall reported to council that a conditional use hearing may be scheduled to consider the opening of an Airbnb rental unit at a property in the borough.

The hearing could be held March 4 when council is scheduled for its next meeting.

Starting at $2.99/week.
