‘Harboring Hope’ events planned to celebrate Juneteenth in Williamsport

Juneteenth will be celebrated with a weekend-long list of events known as Harboring Hope, the city department of recreation announced on Facebook.

The festivities will kick off with a community cookout at Memorial Park on Thursday from noon to 4 p.m., which will feature free food, games, music, vendors and giveaways,

A Freedom Walk will take place from Freedom Road to Brandon Park on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m.

At the completion of the walk, participants will be treated to a showing of Disney & Pixar’s “SOUL” at the bandshell, where movie treats, bounce houses and more will be available.

A trolley will be stationed at Brandon Park to transport walkers to Freedom Road, a flyer for the event said.

On Saturday, the community is invited to participate in the YWCA Race Against Racism, which steps off at 9 a.m.

Beginning at 10 a.m., participants can enjoy live music, food, history exhibits, poetry readings and the crowning of Mr. & Mrs. Juneteenth, according to the post.

“Let’s come together to honor the past, celebrate the present and build hope for the future,” the post reads.

Formally recognized by former President Joe Biden, Juneteenth marks the official ending of slavery in the United States, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.
