Amended term-limits ordinance passes for Williamsport officials

A term limits ordinance is in place in Williamsport following final approval by City Council.

The first iteration of the law was vetoed by Mayor Derek Slaughter.

“We went back to the drawing board, had a lot of good discussions,” Councilman Jon Mackey said.

This passage of the ordinance will set term limits for the treasurer, controller, City Council and the mayor, he said.

The mayor’s will be two terms, or eight years. Somebody could conceivably take a break for four years and come back and run again, he said. Council was set for three terms, or 12 years as well as the treasurer and controller, Mackey said.

“We put that language in this version of the ordinance that will allow a couple of elected officials to still run for a third term if they so choose,” Mackey said.

Council President Adam Yoder said he believed there was a problem of entrenchment as seen with elected officials across the board.

“This minimizes that,” he said.

However, he noted, he still had some reluctance to vote in favor of it because of the inclusion of the language that “allows a few people to run beyond what they would normally be able to because of this ordinance.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
