H. Leroy Sullivan Jr.

H. Leroy Sullivan Jr., 82, of Hughesville, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at home with his wife of 60 years at his side.

Born Jan. 31, 1936, in Hughesville, he was a son of the late Harvey Leroy Sr. and Wanda Viola (Sheets) Sullivan. He and his wife, the former Betty Ann Montague, would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on Aug. 10, 2018.

Leroy was a graduate of Hughesville High School, class of 1953. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge from active duty on Jan. 30, 1957, Leroy would continue his military career in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1966 until 1989. He retired from the U.S. Postal service after 37 years as a mail carrier.

He was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Hughesville, American Legion Post 601, Sonestown, Muncy Valley Moose Lodge No. 866, East Lycoming Historical Society and the Fleet Reserve Association. During his free time, Leroy enjoyed hunting with family at the cabin and fishing in Canada with his friends Carl Crager, Kenny Rinker and Ed DeParasis. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching NASCAR racing and watching baseball games on the deck with his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Brig Lore. Leroy looked forward to monthly breakfasts with his classmates. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all the activities they were involved in.

Surviving, in addition to his wife; are a daughter, Kathryn L. (Lynn) Poust, of Hughesville; two sons, Steven C. Sullivan, of Cantwell, Ark., and LTC Gregory Montague (Jodi) Sullivan, Ret. of Hughesville; two brothers, Dr. Dale B. (Carrol) Sullivan, of The Villages, Fla., and Gary L. (Donna) Sullivan, of Hughesville; eight grandchildren, Janee N. (BJ) Smith, Jonathan C. Shaner, Beth A. (Dr. Matthew) Kelleher, Zachary L. and Kyle B. Poust, Colton M. Sullivan, Ryan W. (Larran Hess) Wodrig and Brennan B. (Nicole) Wodrig; five great-granddaughters; and 10 great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Rev. Cinda J. Brucker officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with graveside military honors accorded by combined veteran’s organizations.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
