Stanley J. Winner
Stanley J. Winner, 92, of Williamsport, died on March 1, 2021, at his residence.
Born Jan. 9, 1929, son of Oswell and Ida Winner.
Stanley graduated in 1947 from Williamsport High School where he was a member of the football, basketball and track teams. He was a member of the 1945 undefeated Williamsport High School football team. He was captain of the 1947 track team.
Mr. Winner had an unusual military career with stints in the Navy, Army and later, the U.S. Air Force. He served as a radio operator for General Andrew Pick O’Meara of United States Southern Command and accompanied him to many South and Central American countries. While a member of the military, he and his family traveled and lived across the U.S., Asia, Greenland, and Central America. Stanley received many awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf clusters for combat missions in Korea and Vietnam. Stanley received the Ambassador for Peace Medal in 2019 for his service in the Korean War. He was a member of several all-star baseball teams in the Air Force and several as the air force recruiter for the Williamsport area before retiring in September 1970.
Stanley was the Manager of the Oaks Club for three years and was elected president of the Central Pennsylvania Club Managers Association. He and his wife, Tina, and children operated the Skyview Restaurant at the Lycoming County Airport. He was on the Lycoming County Recreation Committee for the operation of White Deer Golf Course.
He was a life-member of the VFW Post 7863 and American Legion Post 6323, Zafar Grotto, Republican Club, and Oaks Club. He was a former member of Iram Temple and Williamsport Shrine. Stan was past president of the White Deer Retiree’s Golf League for which he was a member of a championship team twice. During his golfing career he had three holes-in-one. He attended Third Street United Methodist Church.
His wife of 46 years, Ernestine (Tina) Winner, died in 1996 and a son, Jackie Matthew Winner, died in 1963.
Surviving are two daughters, Melody Herber (Kerry) of Henderson, Nev., and Tina (Dan) of St. Petersburg, Fla., three sons, Stanley Jr., Jerald L. (Kathie), and Scott F. of Williamsport; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as his special friend and companion, Colleen Cioffi.
There will be a graveside service on Thursday, March 4, 11:30 a.m. in Montoursville Cemetery, with Rev. James Behrens officiating and military honors accorded by Lycoming Co. Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.
There will be a walk-through viewing on Thursday, 10 to 11 a.m., at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, PA 17754.
Following Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines, masks and social distancing will be required.
