Frances Schneider Calkins

Frances Schneider Calkins died on April 9, 2021 in Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of 98. She was born Jan. 3, 1923 in Hughesville and was a resident of Hughesville until her marriage to the former Dr. Vincent P. Calkins in Tennessee in 1945.

Her passing came after prolonged confinement to her bed in a nursing home. She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Vincent P. Calkins, and she is survived by two sons: Roderick P. Calkins and Gregory P. Calkins. She also has four grandchildren: Sascha, Gavin, Clancy and Agnes, as well as one great-grandson: Jasper. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Theodore P. Schneider and Marian Weaver Schneider, as well as her brother, Theodore P. Schneider, Jr.

Frances had several undergraduate and graduate degrees. She worked for the government on the Manhattan Project during World War II and she met her husband in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. After moving to Ohio in 1953, she worked as a teacher and school psychologist for many years with the Cincinnati Public Schools. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In later years, she was active with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, an avocation she dearly loved. An outstanding bridge player, she was also fond of reading, developing a wealth of knowledge in many areas. After she lost her husband, she lived alone for more than forty years. Her love and vibrant personality will be sorely missed by family and friends.

She will be interred on May 7 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery on the Schneider family plot in her hometown of Hughesville, according to her wishes. Services will be at the gravesite only. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a possible donation in her memory to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
