Margaret Joann Zeigler

Margaret Joann Zeigler, 86, a longtime resident of South Williamsport died on November 3, 2021 at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and thoughtful friend.

Born February 16, 1935, in Renovo, Clinton County, PA, Joann was the daughter of the

late Francis Edward and Julia Catherine (McCann) Hooley. As a child, she developed a lifelong love of reading and writing, much like her father and his own journalistic endeavors, covering local meetings as a reporter for the local newspaper. She was an honored essayist and a graduate of Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic High School in Renovo. She continued her education at Lock Haven University, graduating in 1956 with a degree in Secondary Education. Joann went on to teach high school English and French in the South Williamsport School District, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Lock Haven University Alumni Association and Pennsylvania State Education Association.

Joann was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting and was a supporter of the James V. Brown Library. Over the years, she participated in various knitting groups for community and donation purposes. Joann loved a good book and a knitting project, completing many for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a contributor and supporter of Daniel’s Closet, donating hand-knit sweaters for those less fortunate and also knitting and donating infant caps to the UPMC Maternity Ward. Knitting became a vital outlet in her years of medical therapies. Recently with the Covid-19 pandemic she hand-knit mask extenders for family frontline workers to use and distribute in their community and workplaces.

Joann was a member of The Saint Lawerence Roman Catholic Church in South Williamsport. She and her husband, James A. Zeigler were united in marriage on August 10, 1957 at the Saint Joesph’s Roman Catholic Church in Renovo, PA.

Joann is survived by her loving husband, James A. Zeigler of South Williamsport, her children: James A. (Margaret) Zeigler of Wyoming PA, Daniel F. (Diana) Zeigler of Williamsport, Timothy D. Zeigler of Portland, OR, Jennifer A. (Timothy) Higgins of Charlotte, VT; grandchildren: Matthew Zeigler, Gregory (Charlotte) Zeigler, Patrick (Kelly) Zeigler, Anna Zeigler, Laura Zeigler, Jane Zeigler, Fiona Higgins, Maeve Higgins, Seamus Higgins, Deirdre Higgins, and four great-grandchildren: Lilyanna, Isabella, Pia and Josephine. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her late parents, she is also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law Francis Edward and Olga Hooley.

Joann was ever an optimist whose encouraging, supportive manner was accompanied by her humor and incisive wit. The feelings of loss and tears of the heart in this moment will pass. The lasting memories will bring comfort and smiles of happiness, her legacy freely given to us all.

There will be no public services to be announced at this time. If so desired, contributions in memory of Joann may be named to either Daniel’s Closet C/O Redeemer Lutheran Church 1101 Washington Boulevard, Williamsport, PA 17701 or to the James V.
