Mendelssohn I. Hoxie

Mendelssohn I. Hoxie, 99, of Jersey Shore, passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2022 at his home.

Born May 19, 1922, in Malone, N.Y., he was a son to the late Verne Hoxie and the former Mildred Miller.

Mendelssohn honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jersey Shore and the Gideons International. Earning his Bachelors in Journalism from Syracuse University, he went on to gain his Master’s Degree at Brockport University.

He began his career as a journalist before accepting a teaching position at Byron Bergen High School in N.Y. Moving to Pa., he then worked in administration for the Title 3 educational program in Lock Haven, Williamsport Area Community College and the Jersey Shore Hospital. Before retiring, he and his wife became the owners of the Time and Talent craft store in Lock Haven for several years.

He married his sweet heart, former Pauline V. Ouderkirk, on Aug. 30, 1947, in Syracuse, and celebrated their 74th anniversary this past August. He is survived by Pauline, his three daughters; Susan E. Hoxie of Frankfurt, Germany, Janice L. Rivera of Avis and Anne N. Bittner of Purcellville, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and extended family.

Due to inclement weather, funeral services for Mr. Mendelssohn Hoxie will now be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church, 236 South Main St., Jersey Shore, with a viewing beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. He will be laid to rest in the Jersey Shore Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
