George R. Schramm, Jr
George R. Schramm, Jr., 75, of Cogan Station, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at the Gatehouse after courageously fighting cancer for the past ten years. Born on February 8, 1949, in Williamsport, he was one of three children to the late George R. Schramm, Sr. and Betty L. (Yoder) Schramm. George was a lifelong resident who dedicated his life to his family.
A proud graduate of Williamsport High School in 1967, George earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. On January 2, 1982, he married Joyce L. Shipman.
George’s professional life was marked by his craftsmanship and dedication. He spent many hours honing his skills in carpentry and construction. His talent and work ethic led him to a significant role as the Assistant Director of Engineering and Maintenance at Williamsport Hospital. George’s career also included a brief period at Textron, before concluding his professional journey with the United States Postal Service, where he retired from in 2014.
Beyond his work, George was deeply committed to participating in his community through cancer support groups, the Alzheimer’s Association, and bereavement groups. He was an involved member at Bethel Church of Loyalsock. An intelligent man with a zest for life, George had a wide array of interests that kept him active and engaged. He was passionate about sports, often involved in his family’s sports and school activities. George found joy in playing board games like Scrabble and Monopoly with his loved ones. His athletic talents were to be admired as he excelled in many sports, including baseball, softball, skiing, and football. George’s teammates nicknamed their left-handed quarterback “The White Knight.”
George’s hobbies also included coin and stamp collecting, pursuits that showcased his meticulous and patient character. His interest in genealogy was more than a pastime; it was a means to connect with his heritage and leave a legacy of family history for future generations.
Surviving are his loving wife Joyce L. Schramm; two daughters Valerie Ramin (Freddie) and Melanie Schramm; two grandchildren whom affectionately called him “Pa”, Tressalyn and Talon Ramin; one brother, Curtis Schramm (Pat), and one sister, Betty Ralston (Mark).
Funeral services to honor George’s life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St. Williamsport. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at Sanders Mortuary. A private burial will be held for immediate family.
