We need to dig deep Thursday for United Way

The Lycoming County United Way fundraising campaign is in overtime.

With good reason.

The money raised to date is significantly below the $1.7 million projected to meet the needs of United Way’s program partners. Try six figures less than needed.

Over the past four editions of the Sun-Gazette, we’ve been publishing stories illustrating the real-life needs that are met by agencies funded by the United Way.

If you are wondering whether you should give money during Thursday’s campaign blitz, reread those stories.

And don’t think for a second that this doesn’t involve you because, after all, you will never need those agencies. Thousands of people have thought that.

Then their house burns down.

Or unforeseen health, domestic strife or economic crisis hits.

Or their child needs help with literacy or some handicap.

Or their parent or their neighbor’s parent needs special services for the elderly.

They frantically look for help and, chances are, the help is being provided by a United Way funding partner.

We need you to dig deep tomorrow and rescue this year’s United Way funding campaign.

Make the call.

Send a check.

Anything is acceptable.

Don’t let this be the year our United Way funding effort failed to adequately provide for human services agencies that already operate on shoestrings.

Give. You will feel better.

Our community thanks you ahead of time.
