MLB-LLB marriage Aug. 20 will take Bowman Field, city to another level
There’s going to be a marriage Aug. 20 in Bowman Field.
It’s between Major League Baseball and the Little League World Series.
The formal invitations have not been sent out yet, but the details have leaked out.
And all of them are great news for the city, its minor league baseball franchise and the region.
Putting the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals on the Bowman Field turf for a major league game that counts as part of the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball extravaganza is a big enough deal.
But consider the long-term bells and whistles that come with the deal.
Bowman Field is legitimately historic, built in 1926, host to a Babe Ruth barnstorming tour and future major leaguers for nine decades, including Nolan Ryan and Roger Maris.
But the city and Williamsport Crosscutter owners struggle to keep the 90-year-old facility up to today’s strict minor league standards.
That all goes away with this baseball game.
Because of the game, the facility must be brought to Major League Baseball field and lighting standards. Expect a lighting assessment that leads to improvements and a complete overhaul of the field prior to start of the Crosscutters season in mid-June.
While a state grant is paying for replacement of bleachers with grandstand seats at Bowman, that will be taken to another level, courtesy of MLB, with all seating new in 2017. That will include replacement of all the reserved seats, movement of them closer to the field, an increase in their size, and addition of cupholders and wider aisles.
Clubhouse and dugout improvements also are likely to be part of the plan.
Scheduling of the game on the first Sunday of the Little League World Series, across from the Original League home of Little League Baseball, will tie a grand bow around the event.
Expect Little League to refine its tournament schedule with no games the first Sunday night and full attendance of players participating in the Series at the major league game.
The local profile is already worldwide during the Series.
With this game, the profile goes to another level for that night and the future of Bowman Field long-term takes a renaissance step.
