South Side fire merger seems destined, sadly, to be two-sided

The state attorney general’s office is filing paperwork in Lycoming County Court seeking to dissolve South Williamsport’s Independent Fire Co.

It was not the initial plan when South Williamsport leaders decided to merge the borough’s three fire companies in March of 2016, creating a new South Williamsport Fire Department.

Borough officials believed an improper amount of manpower and equipment were being sent by the three autonomous companies. They were looking for more efficiency and cost limits with the merger, something that is absolutely necessary given the trends of the past two decades in volunteer fire companies.

Only two of the companies got on board with the idea.

What’s done is done, but it’s sad nonetheless that the merger could not be worked out to include three response areas instead of two.
