Please, be careful tonight — watch out for the kids!

No doubt many adults are annoyed by reminders that we need to be on our toes to protect children in our communities. After all, we are adults, are we not? We don’t need to be told to watch out for the kids, do we?

Apparently, we do, especially around Halloween. Children are twice as likely to be hit and killed by cars while observing this holiday’s traditions than on any other day of the year, according to the National Safety Council.

Trick-or-treating will be permitted in most local communities tonight, following heavy rains on Thursday. Thoughtful parents understand a few simple safety precautions — all common sense, really — are needed to keep children safe while they go door to door. For small children, nothing beats having an adult with them.

Motorists need to be on the alert, too — more than on any other night of the year. Excited children not looking both ways before darting onto streets may be the rule rather than the exception.

Please, be careful tonight. Watch out for the kids. Let’s ensure the only unpleasantness they experience is upset stomachs from too much candy.
