Awareness vital to avoiding scams that plague society

Unwanted and harassing telephone calls create an alarming amount of anxiety. It seems there’s a new phone scam on just about any given day. These scams play on the emotions in an attempt to get money.

The most recent one involves a caller claiming the recipient has a warrant out for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller then asks for the person’s credit card number or other financial information.

Instead of giving information, Sheriff Mark Lusk suggests collecting information — the phone number from which the call was placed — and turning it over to law enforcement.

It’s really unfortunate that these scams just never end. This most recent one serves as a reminder to never, ever give out personal information over the telephone without first verifying the legitimacy of the caller.

Even then, be very, very aware.
