Missed ice cream stores

Recently, on the front page of the Sun, I read, with pleasure, the history of Hurr’s Dairy store and others, in my old Vallamont neighborhood. It was a great article and thoroughly, I enjoyed it. Congratulations.

But, I was saddened to notice that my Grandpa’s Ice Cream Store at the rear of 406 Hawthorne Ave, and others in the area, were not included.

As an eight/nine year old, growing up during WWll, fondly I recall my Pop Beiter and my Beiter Uncles, inviting me to witness the manufacturing of their Ice Cream in the store basement. I even went with them, to the Ice Plant, to pick up 300-pound cakes of ice to use in making the Beiter’s Ice Cream. It was a privileged and great fun. On any Sunday, there would be long lines stretching from Elmira Street down Hawthorne Avenue to the Store, just waiting to purchase their weekly supply of that famous Beiter’s Ice Cream. Wonderful memories indeed.

Thanks for making my memories come alive.
