Leaders, heroes and a temperamental narcissist

John Sidney McCain Sr. was a U.S. Navy Admiral. He commanded several battle groups during World War II and was awarded the Navy Cross and Distinguished Service Medal.

John Sidney McCain Jr. also was a U.S. Navy Admiral who served in WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star.

John Sidney McCain III was a U.S. Navy Captain pilot and Senator. During the Vietnam war, his aircraft carrier was engulfed in a fire. He was injured trying to help another pilot when a bomb exploded, and he suffered injuries to his legs and chest. He transferred to another ship and continued to fly combat missions. In 1967, he was shot down during his 23rd bombing mission. He fractured both arms and a leg when he ejected from his plane. He parachuted into a lake and almost drowned. He was pulled from the lake by North Vietnam soldiers, was beaten and stabbed. He was not medically treated. Instead, for a time he was continuously beaten and interrogated. He ended up spending six weeks in a hospital. Only when the North Vietnamese realized he was the son of an admiral was he given proper treatment. He refused to be released unless all the prisoners in his POW facility were released also. Later, due to lack of cooperation with the enemy, he was tied up and beaten every two hours. He ended up being a POW for 5 1/2 years. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

The USS John McCain destroyer was commissioned in 1994. It was named after Capt. John McCain III’s father and grandfather.

In an act of cowardice in the face of the legacy of the heroism of the McCain family, a White House official tried to “camouflage” the USS John McCain from Donald Trump during his recent trip to Japan. This official didn’t want to make Trump angry over possibly seeing the “McCain” name. After all, John McCain was not a hero in Trump’s eyes. This is the same Trump who escaped service in Vietnam due to suspicious bone spurs! Former Secretary of Defense Gen. James Mattis would have never allowed this episode to take place. He is also a hero for being the only cabinet official ever to stand up to the Trump. Who can really admire and continue to defend this President? Shameless.
