Reminiscence

Dateline: June 6, 2019 — “School board mulls tax hike.” Oh how I remember back when the Williamsport Area School Board was taken over by the citizen group “Quest” (Quality education — sane taxation) and the year after year tax increases of the previous board not only stopped but actually went down.

The teachers’ union, being so upset that all that extra money was no longer coming in to help line their pockets, embarked on a campaign of lies and deceit to discredit what the new board was doing. Claiming that the lack of yearly tax increases would “hurt the children” zeroed in on a group of gullible parents and backed them to run against the Quest board.

This group took on the moniker “Best.” They went about spreading the falsehoods perpetrated by the union and convinced the voters to put them in control of the district. Then they proceeded to close several schools and even with a decline in student population started the old practice of raising real estate taxes every year.

I only hope that those voters who were fooled into supporting them are happy when they make out those checks to pay this “ransom” in order to keep their homes from being offered up at the next “Sheriff Sale”

When it comes to the school district and raising taxes, “more is never enough.”
