Ice cube experiment
A glass filled with ice cubes and water will not overflow as the ice melts but will not change even a tiny bit. This is true. However, fill a glass with water to the top and drop in an ice cube. Surprise, it overflows. This is what happens when ice from a glacier resting on land slides into the sea. It turns out there is a lot of ice resting on land. Much of it is Greenland and on the continent of Antarctica. It is moving into the sea at an alarming and increasing rate. An interesting book, “The Ice at the End of the World” by Joh Gertner, is an excellent history of how we got to understand the glaciers and how they are changing.
