Many of us wonder

Mitch McConnell will be taking an oath before the trial in the Senate regarding the impeachment of President Trump. He will take an oath promising he’ll be impartial and consider all the evidence before making a decision. How can he be impartial when he has already said that he’ll be coordinating with the defendant, President Trump? Can you imagine what would happen if a member of the jury in a criminal trial said that they have made their decision before the trial began?

Not only will Trump be on trial in the Senate, but the members of the Senate will be on trial, and their constituents will have to decide if they acted in a way to be reelected, or in the best interests of our country and our Constitution. If Republican congressmen are okay with what Trump did with Ukraine, then they can’t complain if they learn that several Democratic presidential candidates offered to repay the favor if a foreign country contributed money to their campaign and used Facebook to make their opponents look bad.

Many of us wonder how about 40 percent of Americans can still support our president and oppose his removal. Let’s not consider what in my opinion are his stupid, rambling tweets, his thousands of lies, his un-American, traitor-like attitude toward our investigative agencies, like the FBI, and the press, and our judges, and our Constitution. He has taken away press credentials to the White House of several reporters who ask tough questions and he has threatened to remove licenses of CNN and MSNBC. Hitler had support of only 30 percent of Germans, but their legislature gave him dictatorial powers, and he used that to take control of the press, the police, the military, etc.

The most common reason Trump’s supporters don’t want him removed is the economy. His tax scam did benefit the upper 10 percent and corporations, causing the stock market to go up, but he has not reduced drug prices or health care costs, and he isn’t fighting to increase the minimum wage or improve background checks. So why do many working-class people still support him? Can it be his charisma that makes him an effective cult leader? Or is it because he is “not a politician,” even though he’s more corrupt than any politician I know, in my opinion. Or is it because he’s pro-life even though he has flip-flopped on that issue several times and a reversal of Roe vs. Wade does not guarantee states will outlaw abortions. Or is it because of his foreign policy, even though the experts feel that “the great negotiator” has failed with China, North Korea, Iran, the Kurds, NATO, and has weakened the alliances with all our allies. Are his supporters so naive that they don’t realize that Trump is Putin’s puppet?

There are pro-democracy demonstrations happening all over the world, yet our anti-democracy president still has many supporters. Go figure!
