Telling

I read the letter “Science” and found it very telling about people like the author of the letter. I can not even describe them as healthy skeptics. Not only does he use the archaic definition science but cannot even use theory and hypothesis of science properly. By the way, a theory is not an assumption.

It is true scientists are human and fallible but to say they all operate with prejudice and bias with a hidden agenda muddles the significance of science. I think your view of science is based on prejudice, bias and a hidden agenda.

It is human to discover, to investigate, to experiment, to share our findings, to discuss these findings. It is not uncommon to be skeptical of new science but to say not to trust it at all is because scientists are human is to say not to trust anyone who is human including yourself.

I am not surprised that some think like the writer of the letter. These same people will buy into the latest conspiracy theory, believe in their political leader’s hidden agenda, fear the unknown, fear change, lack empathy for other people. Some of them claim wearing a face mask violates their freedoms. We are now seeing the repercussions of refusing to wear a face mask in public spaces.

There is no harm in being skeptical. There is greater harm when you refuse to trust any science based on the flimsy belief that all science is biased and prejudicial and have hidden agendas.
