Today, Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, is a sad day in our nation’s history. Before I go on, however, I must commend and thank Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey for being courageous enough to vote on the correct side of history. Donald Trump was (as the 57 votes that were cast to convict him) guilty of inciting insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. Donald Trump did not care that lives were being threatened that day and that many were injured and a Capitol police officer was murdered. In fact, he encouraged the lynching of our vice president and speaker of the House.
The invaders said over and over they were there under orders of Donald Trump, that Donald Trump was their boss. They, representing the self-described law and order president, named called, attacked, and even killed one of the Capitol police. Donald Trump called these people to come to Washington ready to battle — and they did. Donald Trump even wanted to pardon himself ahead of time knowing that what he was doing was wrong. To attack the integrity of our election and then to physically attack our Capitol should have led to Trump’s conviction. I cannot believe our nation has stooped so low as to allow such a treasonous atrocity by a then sitting president to go unpunished.
I further cannot believe that our newspaper, which supposedly stands up for our nation, has not done so by calling out the atrocities of this former president. I further cannot believe our Congressional representative has not stood up against what Trump has done.
I am so relieved that Trump is out of office. History will show that his only god was himself, his money, and his power. I hope and I pray this great nation can recover from his four years of despicable leadership.
