Cry Wolf

I am angry, not so much about the anti-maskers or the anti-vaccers but at our liberal governor whom I voted for twice.

My anger with Tom Wolf is for exactly the opposite reason his usual opponents have: he is not enforcing his health department’s cries for a mask mandate in certain public places, such as gyms, and is easing the restrictions all too rapidly on customer capacity in restaurants. In fact, I’ve seen restaurants in the area filled to capacity.

For several months now I have spoken to numerous PAHD agents to complain about establishments in the county not enforcing the mandates. No action has ever been taken to my knowledge. The number of cases of COVID in the county is now over 11,000, an exponential increase from just a few months ago when the cases were in the hundreds. If herd immunity is not achieved in the U.S., the variants of the virus could overwhelm the protection afforded by the current vaccines.

Maybe the governor’s lack of enthusiasm to enforce his own mandates comes from the very fact that he is a liberal and not a progressive. Liberal politicians tend to dislike exercising restraints when what is being restrained or restricted is of no immediate danger to the public. Progressives are more likely to see the whole picture. Or, does Wolf simply lack the courage to incur criticism from the GOP Legislature and rural residents of the state who have never seen much danger in COVID?
