Our liberal friends

Ronald Reagan quoted, “the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant, it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.” Example: A writer who wrote “control those guns” published by the Sun-Gazette on July 15, criticized my letter on July 5 “eliminate gun control.”

I wrote: In 1775 the population of the colonies was 2.5 million. When King George 3rd ordered their firearms to be confiscated, they resisted and defeated the most powerful nation in the world with 8 million citizens to win their independence from England. She erroneously wrote that I believed the Revolutionary War was won by 8 million colonial citizens.

She then alleged a well-regulated militia referred to in the 2nd amendment does not infer individuals have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms and stated, America’s 2 million military members and 100 million gun owners were truly scary. She’s definitely unfamiliar with George Mason, father of the Bill of Rights who wrote in 1778, “I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officials.” Richard Henry Lee in 1788, “A militia when properly formed are in fact the people themselves, and include, according to the past and general usage of the states, all men capable of bearing arms to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young how to use them.”

She ends her diatribe against law-abiding gun owners suggesting they become regulated within an inch of their lives as soon as possible for civil order and the safety of all citizens. Does she believe Cuba’s governmental gun control regulations were beneficial to the Cuban citizens who were recently suppressed, incarcerated, and even murdered for protesting for their independence and liberty? Would the Cuban government have been capable of suppressing their citizens if they had possessed arms? Has she ever wondered why so many people have gambled with their lives and perished in the desert or drowned in the ocean seeking freedom and liberty in America?

The present administration, their socialists and Marxists sympathizers are attempting to ban and then confiscate Americans’ 20 million semi-automatic rifles with 30 round magazines under the deceitful pretext of public safety. However, all rifles, including those terrifying firearms referred to as assault weapons were responsible for only 364 murders, compared to 600 victims killed by hands/feet, and 397 with clubs/hammers in 2019.

America’s 1776 Declaration of Independence states, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of the citizens right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, it is the peoples right to alter or abolish it. Joseph Story, associate justice of the supreme court wrote in 1833, the right of the people to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of the liberties of a republic, since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers, and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.

Let’s never forget! America’s armed society is a silent reminder to our government officials that they are our, the people’s, servants, not their masters. When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear government, there is tyranny.
