The tax man

Donald Trump calls himself the “Tariff Man,” recently telling business executives at the Economic Club of Chicago that, “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff. It’s my favorite word.”

But let’s name tariffs what they really are – sales taxes on imported goods. Trump says that he wants to impose automatic tariffs of 10% to 20% on every country we trade with, 60% on China, and up to 1,000% in some cases.

The moderator of the Chicago event tried repeatedly to get Trump to understand that ordinary American consumers, not foreign countries, would pay the tariffs in higher prices. Economists estimate that an average American family will pay between $1,700 and $3,900 per year. Trump couldn’t be convinced that it mattered.

Trump loves tariffs and he loves giving people nicknames, so let’s get his right: “The Tax Man.” You will pay the price if he gets elected.
