Kaepernick sending wrong message

I want to thank the National Football League for hosting a tryout in Atlanta for Colin Kaepernick and for inviting 24 teams to come and see him tryout. It is very important that we as a nation give a platform to this San Francisco former quarterback. It is very important that the young and impressionable minds of our youth learn from him that the best way to get ahead in life is to defy the norms of society and to disrespect those who are authority figures.

Kaepernick started the “disrespect the National Anthem” when he decided to kneel while it was being played while everyone else in the stands were standing at attention either saluting or with their hand over their hearts. By taking this position, Kaepernick was seeking to draw attention to the fact that racism still exists in America. By taking this position, Kaepernick was also communicating a number of other things as well. He was stating that the thousands of American soldiers who lost their lives in order to place the American Flag on top of the island of Iowa Jima in World War II do not deserve to be honored.

Kaepernick was communicating that the rules of the National Football League that require players to stand at attention and respect the flag should not be obeyed. He was also communicating that the laws of the United States should not be obeyed as well. U.S. Code 301 states, “(1) when the flag is displayed, all other (not military) persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.”

What did Kaepernick gain from these actions? He got a lucrative contract with NIKE worth millions and he sued the NFL with a payout of millions as well.

Disrespecting the flag and the national anthem is more than just disrespecting our fallen veterans who gave their lives so that we could enjoy the freedoms that Kaepernick now enjoys. The National Anthem, in the fourth verse, states:

“O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation! Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!

“Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto — ‘In God is our trust,’ And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

So, disrespecting the flag and the Anthem is stating that we should NOT “praise the power that made us and preserved us as a nation.”

Respecting God and Government(s) is a Biblical message as well. The Bible states: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” (Romans 13:1-5)

In order to chase the magical powers of the almighty dollar, Colin Kaepernick is teaching our youth that standing against the principles that make our nation great and the God who keeps us strong is the ticket to wealth. This is just exactly what our children need. Go Colin!
