Seriously..."God-given Second Amendment right"?????

You're suggesting Moses (simply) ran-outta-room, for that one?

Moses did not enumerate any rights he enumerated wrongs.

I love how SOME will jump on the band wagon, even if they don't know the song! "It's my God Given Right!","It's the Constitution!" - I don't hear any protests when you have to give up your precious Glock at the airport, Federal Building, Post Office,Schools, Philadelphia City Parks... WHY, if it's a "GOD given right" (yea, right.) Why don't you whine that you're required to have a permit, or that you need to be 21, or that you can't carry it across state lines... If you Uzi toting 100 round clip ***3s want to cry the blues, then at least know the entire song... don't just pick the fly crap out of the pepper to suite your own agenda. No one is out to take YOUR gun rights away! If you don't understand that, then you don't have the brains to own a firearm in the first place. Now get down from the bandwagon, you're making an even BIGGER fool of yourselves!

" the ONLY new law, should be one that ALLOWS doctors to report dangerous mental patients without fear of a lawsuit." That's a very slippery slope to be on. I do not agree with this at all. The courts are designed to take care of criminals not the Physician.

JerryfromRI - 9:35 PM "So, do the folks who object to the background checks just concede that there is nothing that can ever be done to stop criminals from owning guns?"

The FBI has a NATION-WIDE file of fingerprints as well as a NATION-WIDE file on DNA. A NATION-WIDE file to track mental patients would be better then a NATIONAL GUN REGISTRY. In addition, the ONLY new law, should be one that ALLOWS doctors to report dangerous mental patients without fear of a lawsuit.

If you concede this point then the only thing society can do to protect itself it build more prisons, lots and lots of prisons.

(Because lots of prisons is what living in a free county is all about.)

Since prisons aren't free, in some form or another, you're going to have to pay higher taxes to pay for them. Presuming you have to labor to earn the money to pay the tax, your working some portion of your life just to pay the extra taxes to support the prisons, the prisons we had to build because the loss of freedom incurred by the background check was unacceptable.

"That logic is skewed."

Correct. Murder is already illegal. What's the point of making a murderer's choice of weapon illegal when he or she already doesn't care about the law?

If criminals don't follow laws then what is this Drug War all about? What is the point of drug laws? Murderers will kill anyway, so what's the point of homicide laws? That logic is skewed.

God gave us the right to assault weapons and high capacity clips? You're kidding me, right?

When the Constitution was written there were no weapons at the time that are capable of the mass destruction current weapns possess. I doubt our founding fathers forsaw today's gun violence.

PA already requires a backgroud check before purchasing a gun. This LAW doesn't stop criminals from getting guns to use for crime. No laws stop criminals. Laws only allow for punishment when you break said laws. Criminals don't follow laws.

I'm curious, if the author believes the 2nd Amendment was God given, then how can he support any method that would change it?

"I'm trying to understand the objection to background checks for firearms purchases."

Jerr - I think you will find the main objection is in the federal government having a list of everyone in the country that owns a gun.

As mentioned previously, states have already begun handing background check info over to Holder (by his request). Why does he need such info and what is he going to do with it?

This should be in the realm of state business and NOT something D.C. needs to know.

I'm trying to understand the objection to background checks for firearms purchases.

(1) An individual commits some crime and lawfully forfeits his right to own a firearm under the due process of law.

(2) The criminal then buys a firearm anyway. (He is a criminal after all.)

So, do the folks who object to the background checks just concede that there is nothing that can ever be done to stop criminals from owning guns?
