I too found the comment about Amanda Knox amusing...

I missed the Knox part, that's a little humerous.

But anyway, RMiller, accused was the wrong word, I understand how people probably interpreted that when I wrote it. I meant it more in the way of "challenging" or rather 'questioning'. I agree, it does take courage and integrity.

I don't believe Ida is accusing people, rather challenging people to get involved. Those were sort of harsh words. It doesn't take resources to pick up a phone and speak to authorities. As enigma points out, it takes courage and integrity. On another note, but similar in comparison, Benghazi and IRS issues won't get resolved because people lack courage and integrity. It's sad.

You don't get sued for testifying truthfully in a criminal case. Name one lawsuit.

is wrong, don't turn a blind eye to it, pick up the phone and call the police. An investigation that turns out to be nothing is better than an investigation that didn't happen that wouldn't turned up a child rapist, domestic abuse, etc.

Enigma, While I agree with much of your thoughts, in some light, I disagree. Today, the legal system and government is so full of red tape that they try harder to keep the public uninvolved than involved. I think in large part the Legal System and the Government don't care as much as they used to.

In terms of sacrifice, I get what you're saying but if you're talking financial sacrifice, the problem there is some families barely have enough finance to put food on the table for their own family. Now that's not me saying they should use that as a reason to ignore these issues, they shouldn't. Personally I've also brought this up several times in previous LTE comments, I think Williamsport needs more neighborhood watch groups (do they even have any?) I think the neighborhood needs to be more involved in who they live around and what their kids are doing. Knowing a bit about your neighbors goes a long way. And, when you see something you think might be wrong, or that you KNOW

Actually, big gov't is part of the problem.

In the past, when a young girl went missing, authorities would round up as many men as they could, deputize them, and set out to search.

That was a time when gov't worked WITH the people.

Today, the investigation is secret and clues obtained are rarely released to the public for fear of spoiling the prosecution's case.

I was raised that the more you care the more that good things will come to you.

wwhickok, I must disagree. Most people do not truly care. They feel bad about these things and wish they didn't happen, but that's not caring. People who care, do something about it. Not having the resources is a cop-out. This is still a mostly free country and your resources are limited only by your willingness to sacrifice. There was a time in this country when this could not have happened because the whole town would have been mobilized to find these girls. We don't have that now and it's because we are so self-focused that we expect someone else to do it. I don't exclude myself from that, I am just pointing out that in general people don't care for each other the way they used to.

Another part is everybody is afraid of getting sued if they get involved, and then having to testify in court. There is a genuine lack of integrity in people anymore.

First of all, I'm sorry for your hardship, but the first thing parents need to teach their kids is to speak up when there's something going on that shouldn't be.

Secondly, I think you'd find that less peple 'don't care' than you think. However most of us don't have access to the resources that legal authorities do to find creeps like this and protect children other than our own against them. It's a difficult challenge that you're accusing people of not caring about.
